- Use of the words "Londonderry" and "Derry". The
site owners are aware that some residents of the city and county refer to the city and
county by the term "Londonderry" and some by the name "Derry". As a
compromise, it is our policy to refer to the city as "Derry" and the county as
"Londonderry".
- Use of the word "Ireland". Whenever we use the word
"Ireland", we are referring to the island of that name. When referring to the
country we use either the term "Republic of Ireland", "Irish Republic"
or by the abbreviation "ROI".
- Use of the word "Irish". We use the word "Irish" in
a geographical sense to refer collectively to all residents of both the Republic of
Ireland and Northern Ireland. It is not intended to be a statement or judgement of
nationality - it refers purely to geographical location.
- Use of the phrase "Northern Ireland". Whenever we use the
phrase "Northern Ireland" we are referring collectively to counties Antrim,
Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry* and Tyrone which are internationally recognised as
being under the jurisdiction of the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern
Ireland". If we use the phrase "northern Ireland" (i.e. without a capital N
at the start of "northern"), then we are referring to the geographical northern
part of the island of Ireland, which may or may not include parts of the Republic of
Ireland and Northern Ireland.
- Use of the word "Britain". When we use the term
"Britain", we are referring to the island of that name, which includes England,
Scotland and Wales but not Northern Ireland**. When referring to the country that rules
the island of "Britain", we use either the term "United Kingdom" or by
the abbreviation "UK".
- Use of the word "Connaught". The spelling of the province of
"Connaught" is in dispute. Some Irish people spell it "Connaght". The
Irish government's official spelling is "Connacht". However, on this
site we use the alternative spelling "Connaught".
